Back when eBay was still new, the thrill of bidding on used treasures was hard to resist. A little of this, a little of that, and before long, our apartment was full of things we may or may not have actually needed. So we started selling them. Then we sold more. And more. Eventually, there was almost nothing left to sell.
This was before PayPal became the standard. Customers were sending cash and Western Union money orders. Our apartment was finally clean, but the question remained: what next?
That’s when the real opportunity appeared.
We discovered that eBay sold-listing data could be downloaded and analyzed. Using Excel pivot tables, we looked closely at what people were actually buying. The surprising answer? Lingerie.
Lingerie? Really?
Yes. Lingerie.
That discovery started a much bigger journey. We began sourcing products, finding suppliers, attending trade shows, making countless phone calls, and learning how to navigate the rules and requirements of running a proper retail business. Like many small businesses, it took time to build. But eventually, we were selling hundreds of items a year on eBay.
Over time, however, eBay became less practical. Between rising final value fees, intense competition, and a marketplace where it often felt impossible to offer fair pricing, it was time to move on.
